With the exception of prairie
dogs, most pet rodents are domesticated animals and well adapted to captivity.
Rodents vary somewhat in their care. All of them require a clean
environment, fresh, wholesome food, and clean water at all times. While they
are commonly kept as pets for young children, it is essential for parents to
take responsibility for assuring that proper care is accomplished. Children
will learn responsibility by example. Supervision is essential during
handling of these small pets to prevent injury to child or pet. Remember
that most rodents are very prolific breeders and if unchecked, can easily
