Heartworm disease is caused by the same parasite that infects dogs and is transmitted via mosquito bites. The incidence in cats is much lower, but still occurs in a small percentage of cats in Illinois. In dogs, heartworm primarily causes heart failure. Cats can develop a variety of signs, including severe respiratory signs, acute allergic reactions, chronic vomiting, weight loss, and sudden death. Heartworm testing is available for cats showing signs. A monthly preventative is available for cats and is strongly recommended during mosquito season, especially for cats that go outside. |
