Bird Grooming Techniques
 |
All Creatures Animal Hospital provides the following
grooming services. Patients must have been examined within the past year to have
grooming performed. Keep in mind that the following procedures could lead to
injury if done improperly.
|

Nail Trimming
 | Why?
 | Client comfort |
 | Patient safety |
 | Improved pet/owner bond |
|
 | How?
 | Adequate restraint is critical |
 | Two people are required for this job |
 | Nails should be 1/4 of a circle |
 | Very small birds can be clipped with nail scissors |
 | Others are trimmed by grinding with a hobby drill |
 | Secure hold on foot to prevent injury |
 | Press hobby drill firmly along side or cutting edge |
 | Round off with the hollow tip |
 | Occasionally some bleeding will occur |
 | The hobby drill may heat up enough to cauterize |
 | Always have styptics available |
 | Hold pressure on sides of toe until cautery is complete to limit
bleeding |
|

Wing Trimming

Beak Trimming
 | Why?
 | Normal birds should not need this |
 | Needs a diagnosis prior to starting beak trims |
 | Smoothing outer layers OK as cosmetic procedure |
 | Blunting tip does not help reduce pain of bites |
|
 | How?
 | This is a one person job |
 | Securely restrain bird |
 | With the hobby drill, sculpt beak into normal shape |
 | Study beak shape of different species |
 | Watch for excessive stress!! |
 | Cauterize if necessary but don’t let bird get the styptic in mouth, it
burns!! |
|

 | Band Removal
 | Why?
 | Some risk of catching on things, leading to injury |
 | Doesn’t fit |
 | Accumulation of keratin/debris under band |
|
 | How?
 | This is a three person job |
 | One restrains the bird, one holds foot and band, one cuts the band |
 | Use bolt cutters or wire cutters |
 | Be careful the band doesn’t tilt in jaws |
 | Closed bands are cut in two spots |
 | Keep the band for future reference |
